Anti-Aging Tips: The Top Five Foods For Older People
We all slow down a bit as we get older. It’s a fact of life that we’re not (quite) as active as we were when we were a teenager or in our twenties. But
that doesn’t mean that life has to grind to a halt just because we’re getting older. Diet has an important part to play in how we age – the statement “you are what you eat” is still true – so what are the top 5 foods to keep us older people looking and feeling young?
1. Fiber-containing foods
The actual fiber source is probably less important that eating foods that contain decent amounts of fiber. You can eat an all grain cereal – and it doesn’t have to be as boring as All Bran unless you want it to be – to provide a good start for the day. Brown bread and brown rice will work, as will fresh fruit and vegetables. So you don’t have to resort to a fiber supplement to get enough to keep you moving.

2. Leafy green vegetables
Again the precise source is secondary to eating your greens, just like your mother told you all those years ago. So make sure you get a portion of leafy green vegetables most days. If you don’t like the smell or taste of cooked cabbage then grate it in with your other leaves or eat it as a coleslaw ingredient. They will help your eyesight as these cheap and nutritious vegetables contain higher than average amounts of lutein than you can get elsewhere. They also contain carotenoids, flavenoids and other anti-oxidants which have been shown to help stave off cancer.
3. Calcium
This is important to keep your bones healthy. So make sure that you keep eating foods that are high in calcium such as cheese, yogurt and even canned salmon. Our older bodies don’t salvage as much calcium from food as we did when we were younger so this is one where a supplement could be a good idea for anti-aging.
4. Green tea for Anti-Aging
This is naturally low in caffeine and high in antioxidants. It may take a bit of getting used to versus coffee or regular tea but even a cup or two most days will be beneficial. There are also flavored versions available nowadays if you find regular green tea isn’t to your taste.
5. Fish
Historically we’ve always eaten fish over the thousands of years of our existence. The vitamins and oils that it contains help to keep us healthy. Eating fish on a regular basis and at least once a week will help to keep your blood healthy. It will also help with your eyes and even your joints. So if you’ve been noticing the early onset of arthritis or osteoporosis then it’s definitely worth making sure that your diet includes enough fish.
Keeping these top foods on your shopping list should help keep you feeling younger for longer. As always, a varied diet is also a “must” to make sure that you get enough of all the different trace minerals and vitamins.
