No-Tanning Pledge!
Only on SkinInc.com: Develop a No-tanning Pledge Just In Time for Spring Break
Posted: March 14, 2012
With more than two million people being diagnosed with skin cancer annually and one in five Americans developing skin cancer in their lifetime, Amy Forman Taub, MD, board-certified dermatologist, founder of Advanced Dermatology in Lincolnshire, IL, and assistant clinical professor at Northwestern University, is setting out to lower those numbers. She’s on a mission to educate the members of the public on the healthy habits of caring for their skin and educating them on how to reduce their risk of skin cancer. One big step forward? Stop tanning.
This year, Taub and her team at Advanced Dermatology are again asking the public to take a “no tanning pledge.” Advanced Dermatology will travel throughout Cook County to collect signatures. Their goal is to collect 10,000 pledges from people making the promise that they won’t tan.
Why? Indoor tanning is associated with melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, damage to eyes and symptoms of premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and sun spots.
She will also travel to area high schools and aim her message at teens who are still visiting tanning salons at alarming rates—2.3 million teens visit them at least once a year. And although a teen’s skin is more susceptible to damage from harmful UV rays, 80% of people 25 and younger said that they think they look better with a tan, according to a survey by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
The price of getting a little tan is high, research shows. In a 2010 study, people who tanned indoors had a 74% increased risk of melanoma compared to those who never tan indoors. And occasional visits can be harmful, too: The risk of melanoma increases by 11% with just four visits per year.

Controversial Ingredients: Setting the Record Straight
I thought this was a really great article and worth re-posting here. – The Wizard of Ahhs….

Skin care is very intimate, and the beauty and cosmetics industry has to be based on trust, in addition to regulation. The regulatory framework of the industry changing, as indicated in the United States by the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, which was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 20, 2010. Unfortunately, the skin care industry is getting caught up in untruths, half-lies, exaggerations and sometimes misnomers. This article will discuss ingredients that have developed a bad reputation, separating fact from opinion. Indeed, when clients come to you with ingredient questions, it is your duty as a skin care professional to educate, sometimes re-educate, and set the record straight.
Preservatives: Formaldehyde-releasers and parabens
Preservatives inhibit the development of microorganisms in cosmetic products by damaging internal structures and cellular membranes to produce cell death. They serve to enhance the safety of cosmetic products, enabling them to remain bacteria-free for approximately three to five years. The controversy about the use of preservatives stems from the fact that anything that kills microorganisms is potentially toxic to mammalian cells. What needs to be taken into consideration is the concentration of these preservatives, as well as the contact time and point, which are determined to avoid side effects.
The ideal preservative should have the following properties:
- A broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect at low concentrations and optimal pH;
- Combination of bactericidal and fungicidal effects;
- Low allergenicity and toxicity, and be nonirritating;
- Stability and water solubility;
- Compatibility with other ingredients (i.e., be both odorless and colorless); and
- Ease of use.
In 1987, a study was undertaken on 5,202 patients tested for possible contact dermatitis upon application of cosmetics; 5.9% of this population was shown to be intolerant to cosmetics. The principal allergens were fragrances and preservatives—in particular, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers.1
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers. Although formaldehyde is a preservative that has both bactericidal and fungicidal activities, it is a strong skin sensitizer. Deutsches Institut für Medizinische Dokumentation und Information—German Institut of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI)—classifies formaldehyde in groups A or C, meaning it has a strong potential to provoke contact allergies.2 Its use has been abandoned in cosmetics except in nail hardeners. Formaldehyde has been replaced by formaldehyde-releasers, which are easier to handle and less likely to lead to contact allergies. These formaldehyde-releasers are named: 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15 and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate.

What is Anti-Aging?
What is Anti-Aging?
When you hear the word “aging”, scare you, right? Do to me, I had a big skin problem at about 5 years ago and talked with my trusted skin care company (for about 15 years…) consultant, she gave me a great advice and I have been doing as what she told me last 5 years, my skin is much better condition now. Not like the information gives you idea about cut or put needle in your skin.
Truth, anti-aging is simpler than you think, this is the advice I got 5 years ago, everything start from sun block. Damage from sun is No. 1 enemy for aging, you believe or not. Sun damage suck whole moisture from your skin and dry out your skin, no moisture = dry skin = wrinkles or another skin problems due to no moisture inside your skin. That’s why always people talk about moisture and moisturizer, you have to moisture your skin 24/7. You can buy very expensive moisturizer from big name brands or visit Dr.’s office but same time you don’t need to have those, you just need to put a good sun block every day, sunny or not, summer or winter, protect your skin from sun every day. Simple right? Yes, you still need moisturizer at bed time to give your skin nice rest and moisture but also you need sun block at daytime. This is simple and most important ant-aging skin care step one. Although drink lots of water, not soda, dehydrate body is enemy No.1 also. Hydrate your body inside and out, that’s best you can do to anti-aging.
But you didn’t know about this step one and your skin is already damaged, we still have products to reduce your problem, like I saved my skin. We can’t completely fix the damage but we can reduce the damage. You can find products to reduce your aging problems without spending lots of money on big brand name companies. I found small young companies make good products with cutting edge technology or all natural, kind to environment… Some people just want to look young and puts knife or needle in your skin but I want to have natural beautiful aging looks, not fake young looks… we don’ want to look like our teenage daughter, we just want to look healthy and youthful, right?
Anti-aging is really come from inside of you and your body, how you live your life, most important is enjoy your life! Then use anti aging skin care products to help your skin keep youthful and beautiful looks. Let’s try natural way before you consider about non-natural way… like put knife or needle inside your skin and make yourself look like 20 years younger than real your age.

How to Select an Anti-Aging Cream When You Have Sensitive Skin?
Selecting Anti-Aging Creams for Sensitive Skin.
Anti-wrinkle creams have become extremely popular recently and the number of different anti-aging skin care
products on the market today, has made it difficult to select a product. We are often overloaded with popular terms as “all-natural” and “antioxidants”, but how do you know what’s right for your skin?
All natural refers to the fact that the ingredients are naturally made and not chemically synthesized or altered. Starting with the oils such as grape seed oil, jojoba oil or almond oil to herbal extracts, skin care manufacturers aim to produce skin care products that are as natural as possible. Natural does not always mean that the product is gentle to the skin. This is dependent on how pure the natural ingredients are, the concentration of the ingredients in the final product and if the person has a sensitivity to one of the ingredients.

Anti-Aging – How to maintain your youthful vigor and looks!
Anti-Aging – How to maintain your youthful vigor and looks!
Anti-aging? What exactly do those words mean? Are you adding more years to your life? Actually, it refers to products and lifestyle habits that help your body to age more slowly and help you maintain your youthful vigor and looks over a longer period of time – even well into your declining years.
If you are still in your early adult years, you probably haven’t thought much about getting old. Most likely, you still have that radiant, glowing, firm skin that all children and young adults enjoy. You aren’t yet experiencing the pangs of wrinkles, lines and sagging skin. But, even at your young age, you should be aware of how aging progresses and how anti-aging products can slow down that process enabling you to keep your youthful glow much longer.

Anti-Aging Tips: The Top Five Foods For Older People
Anti-Aging Tips: The Top Five Foods For Older People
We all slow down a bit as we get older. It’s a fact of life that we’re not (quite) as active as we were when we were a teenager or in our twenties. But
that doesn’t mean that life has to grind to a halt just because we’re getting older. Diet has an important part to play in how we age – the statement “you are what you eat” is still true – so what are the top 5 foods to keep us older people looking and feeling young?
1. Fiber-containing foods
The actual fiber source is probably less important that eating foods that contain decent amounts of fiber. You can eat an all grain cereal – and it doesn’t have to be as boring as All Bran unless you want it to be – to provide a good start for the day. Brown bread and brown rice will work, as will fresh fruit and vegetables. So you don’t have to resort to a fiber supplement to get enough to keep you moving.

Natural Anti-Aging: Top 9 Ways Of Looking Younger
1. Always use sunscreen!
Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature wrinkles. If you must be out in the sun, wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Tanning beds have also been proven to cause cancer and wrinkle your skin.
2. Feed your skin with youth promoting vitamins.
Some vitamins will help to give you younger looking skin. Vitamin C helps to fight against wrinkles and fine lines by producing collagen. Vitamin E helps the skin look younger by protecting it from UV rays. You can knock years off your age by simply changing your diet: eating more fresh fruit and vegetable or taking formulated antioxidants like vitamin E and coenzyme Q10 to supplement the amount that is naturally present in the skin cells.
3. Take regular exercise.
Keeping fit and active with regular physical fitness exercises will do wonders for your health as well as making you look and feel better. As you grow older it will help you to stay young looking and you will feel great for it. At the same time, exercise can keep you healthy and loose weight.

Four Anti-Aging Secrets You Should Know
Four Anti-Aging Secrets You Should Know
Many dread the onslaught of ageing when they hit 40 and are trying many methods to retard or slow down the ageing
process but often to no avail. However there are a number of anti-aging secrets which have been proven to work very well for many.
1) You should know your nutritional needs
Selection of the right type of foods could help maintain soft, smooth and glowing skin. At any given age you need to boost your body and hence your skin with specific nutrients. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks instead of processed or manufactured “fast foods”.
Do not rush when having your meals because when food is not given enough time to be digested properly it becomes a burden on your body causing unnecessary wear and tear that can result in premature aging!
2) Clean and moisturize your skin.
A gentle daily cleanser is all you need if you normal skin. Avoid using a washcloth that could pull and tear at the skin. Your skin should be cleansed with your fingers using gentle, circular motions. While doing this, you should not to stretch the delicate eye area. The reason why you should always try moisturizing the skin is because moisturizing could protect it from the effects of wind, pollution, and sun. Also it helps in retaining the natural moisture from the inside.

The desire to look our best is universal and many people will go to great lengths to have a younger, toned and tightened face. Our face is our
calling card – our power suit and if it is wearing sags, bags and wrinkles from stress, lack of sleep and even too much recreation, you need to know that facial exercise can change all that.
Anti-aging has been with us for years and years.
